Context

Context

In the age of AI, we wanted to create a chatbot on the SupplierWiki website that (1) gives our users an AI-powered option to find answers and (2) provides a reason to keep them coming back to our site.

The project had two constraints to support our team’s lead generation metrics and keep maintenance costs manageable:

  • Users would have to create a free account to use the chatbot.

  • It would only be able to answer supply chain-related questions.

Initially, it felt unlikely that users would opt to use an AI chatbot with only a fraction of the knowledge of ChatGPT and its counterparts, especially given that the barrier to entry is exactly the same: creating a free account.

However, upon further reflection, I saw an opportunity to turn these apparent weaknesses into strengths. Instead of trying to emulate these huge AI companies, I decided to set our chatbot apart as:

  1. A character with personality: rather than being a non-entity like other chatbots, I gave ours a face and name – 1-Click Rick, because it makes every answer just one click away.

  2. A dependable expert: 1-Click Rick only sources knowledge from SupplierWiki’s extensive library of well-researched resources, so whatever is lacking in breadth is made up for in depth and consistency.

  3. A nostalgic, single-use tool: I sprinkled retro, 90s tech aesthetics into the mascot illustration, hero typeface, and chatbot mannerisms. This adds novelty to the tool that other chatbots don’t provide, but it also subtly communicates the chatbot’s limitations in a way that feels intentional, rather than frustrating.
